Partners

The PRIMARY project brings together 12 partners from Finland, Greece, and Estonia, representing research organisations, cooperatives, SMEs, and farmers’ associations. This compact and focused consortium combines strong regional representation with technical, business, and stakeholder engagement expertise.

Each partner plays a vital role in delivering the project’s goals, from research and technical development to pilot demonstrations and outreach. The project is coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, ensuring seamless collaboration and knowledge exchange across the consortium.

CERTH (Centre for Research and Technology Hellas)

Greece

CERTH is a leading Greek research organisation focused on advanced technologies in bioenergy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental assessment. It brings deep technical expertise in biomass processing and biochar applications. In PRIMARY, CERTH leads business model development and sustainability assessments and supports pilot activities and regulatory reviews.

CIVITTA (MTU Civitta Foundation)

Estonia

CIVITTA is an innovation support organisation, focused on technological awareness promotion, entrepreneurship, research, development, and innovation capacities in society. CIVITTA leads communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities. It also supports sustainability and socio-economic assessments, business modelling, and stakeholder engagement.

ELGO (Hellenic Agricultural Organisation DIMITRA)

Greece

ELGO is the only public research institute in Greece focused on food safety, processing, and preservation. With ISO-accredited labs, ELGO brings strong capabilities in microbiology, chemical analysis, and biotechnology. In PRIMARY, it develops fermentation processes for greenhouse by-products and works on biomass stabilisation and storage solutions.

ESEK – Energy Cooperative of Karditsa

Greece

ESEK is a regional cooperative promoting renewable energy and circular bioeconomy in Thessaly. It processes agricultural residues into refined biofuels and operates as an ESCO. In PRIMARY, ESEK supports cotton residue collection, pellet production, and demonstration of biomass heating systems. It also contributes to business modelling and sustainability assessment.

Fiberwood

Finland

Fiberwood is a pioneering materials technology start-up offering fully bio-based, plastic-free insulation and packaging materials. It uses natural and forestry by-products to create sustainable, high-value products. In PRIMARY, Fiberwood demonstrates foam forming using agricultural fibres and supports sustainability and business model development.

LUKE – Natural Resources Institute Finland

Finland

LUKE is Finland’s second-largest governmental research institute supporting the sustainable use of natural resources. It offers scientific expertise and public services in the bioeconomy. In PRIMARY, LUKE leads field trials and feedstock logistics development and supports biorefinery pilots, sustainability assessments, and business model activities.

MINOA – Minoa Energy Community

Greece

MINOA is a citizen-led energy community in Crete promoting sustainable and equitable regional energy transition. It focuses on renewable energy, especially from olive and cotton residues. In PRIMARY, MINOA pilots bioenergy use in municipal buildings, explores compost and fertiliser production, and contributes to business modelling and sustainability work.

MTK – Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners

Finland

MTK is a national advocacy organisation representing over 300,000 Finnish farmers and forest owners. It promotes sustainable rural development and innovation. In PRIMARY, MTK ensures the farmer perspective in business model design and policy impact. It contributes to stakeholder engagement, communication, and knowledge-sharing activities.

NEA ENOSI – Agricultural Cooperative of Karditsa

Greece

NEA ENOSI is a farmer-owned cooperative active in the Thessaly region. It trades grain and cotton and provides advisory services to its members. In PRIMARY, the cooperative leads field-based biomass collection and implements biochar soil improvement practices in cotton cultivation.

RFF – refreame.food

Greece

RFF is dedicated to food system transformation through innovation and digital platforms. It has broad experience in open call implementation and third-party support. In PRIMARY, RFF leads Open Innovation activities, managing the opencalls.fund platform and supporting regional replication.

Valio

Finland

Valio is Finland’s largest dairy and food company, owned by dairy cooperatives. It explores plant-based innovation to improve farmer income and sustainability. In PRIMARY, Valio co-develops and pilots a grass biorefinery on dairy farms and supports business model development for new feed and food applications.

Coordinator

VTT – Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd

Finland

VTT is a state-owned, non-profit research and technology organisation under the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. It leads R&D in carbon-neutral solutions, sustainable materials, and digital innovation. In PRIMARY, VTT coordinates the project and leads the development of fermentation and fibre-forming technologies. It also contributes to regulatory reviews, Open Call implementation, and impact acceleration.
