Grass as an underutilised feedstock: PRIMARY featured in Kehittyvä Elintarvike
The latest issue of Kehittyvä Elintarvike (3/2026), a Finnish food science trade publication, features a four-page article on the potential of grass as an underutilised agricultural feedstock.
The article explores how grass biomass, abundantly available across Finland, could be processed into a range of products beyond animal feed: food-grade protein concentrate, fibre materials, bioenergy, and soil amendments. It covers the science behind Rubisco protein extraction, the logistical challenges of building a viable grass biorefinery supply chain, and the economic opportunities for farmers adding grass to their crop rotation.
PRIMARY is the main initiative referenced in the article. Insights from all Finnish PRIMARY partners were included featuring Luke research professor Marketta Rinne, Valio research director Riitta Partanen, assistant specialist Helka Hypén from the Farmers Union MTK and the coordinator of the project, research manager Emilia Nordlund from VTT on the technical, biochemical, practical and commercial outlook for grass biorefining in Finland.
